Bryggen is the most famous and popular attraction in Bergen and the third most visited tourist attraction in Norway. Almost two million visitors each year explore this old wooden house quarter which has been on the Unesco World Heritage List since 1979. Bryggen has a beautiful location at Vågen in the center of Bergen and just a few steps from the waterfront This huge collection of old wooden buildings originates from about year 1070. During the centuries it was the center for the Hanseatic trade in Norway and the site for the German office, hence its other names like Tyskebryggen (the German Dock) and Hansabryggen. Since most of the buildings are made of wood, it has been threatened and damaged by fire several times. Today´s version has some stone cellars from the 15th century and one quarter of the buildings date back to around 1700. The other buildings are of newer date. Today the area consist of restaurants, pubs, small boutiques, cool office areas and museums. Many if the shops and restaurants face the waterfront, but we definately recommend to explore the small and narrow alleys between the buildings. Here you find small boutiques and speciality stores, art galleries. Here are also the entrance to the many offices, most of them located in the first and second floors of the building with entrances through some small staircases. At the back of the area from the waterfront you find Scøtstuene, which is part of the oldest buildings and Bryggen´s Museum which is built on top of the archaeological excavations which found place after the fire in 1955. Here are also the famous restaurant and pub Bryggen Tracteursted, known for many great concerts and a nice outdoor area in summer ant the Hanseatic Museum with its museum shop. Bryggen is definately a great place to visit, but have in mind that it can be very crowded during the peak season in the summer months. It has an easy acessable location, free entrance in most areas and many great photo opportunities. This video is partly made in the winter season when it is very calm, so if you have the opportunity, this is a nice time to explore the area.
