Fantoft
Stavechurch
Fantoft Stavechurch was originally
built around 1150 in Fortun, Sogn and
moved to Fantoft in 1883.
In 1992 the church was set on fire and
almost everything burned down. The
current owners financed the rebuild of
the church, which is almost a replica of
the old one. The challenge was that
no-one had built a stavechurch in
many hundred years.
The rebuild was finished and
sanctified in 1997.
The name stavechurch derives from
the building construction, where the
loadbearing pinewood posts are called
stav in Norwegian.
THe stavechurch is located at Fantoft,
about 6 km and 15 minutes with car
outside Bergen and can be reached by
both bus and the light train (Bybanen)
from the stops at both Fantoft and
Paradis. The location is uphill from
both stops, shorter but steeper from
Paradis. From both stops it is an about
10 minutes walk.
