Bryggens
Museum
In 1955, the northern parts of Bryggen
in Bergen was destroyed by fire. The
fire was followed by extensive
archaeological excavations on the fire
site, which resulted in many
interesting findings both related to the
history of Bergen and the growth of
medieval European ports. The thick
layers of soil contained a massive
number of old artefacts
Bryggens Museum was established in
1976 and in 1978 the museum
building was built on top of the
archaeological excavations after major
discussions about what to do with the
fire site and the rest of Bryggen. On
the rest of the fire site Radisson Blu
Royal Hotel was built in the same style,
but in a modern version of the
remaining parts of Bryggen
The excavations which includes the
remains of Bergen's oldest buildings
from the first half of the 12th century,
are now the base of the museum and
part of the permanent exhibition. You
can also explore the University
Museum's archaeological material
from the Middle Ages of Bergen and
Western Norway.
The museum also have temporary
exhibitions.
In summer, the museum is open daily
from 11 to 17. The entrance fee is NOK
160 for adults, children up to 17 is
free.
