The wooden
houses
Watch video here
Bergen has several areas with old
wooden houses. Most of them are
rather small and are located in small
narrow streets calles “smau”. All of the
houses are habited. While some of
them are listed, most are a
combination of the old facades and
quite modern and liveable interior.
You will find these buildings both on
Nordnes, in the Skansen area and in
Sandviken.
In Nordnes you will find them on both
sides of the hill, where Knøsesmauet,
Strangebakken and Strangeplassen
are the most famous on the southern
side (facing Nøstet and the cruise
terminal at Dokken). On the other
side, facing Vågen, the most famous
street is Lille Markeveien.
Both areas are only a short walk up
the hill from Torgalmenningen and the
center of Bergen in direction of
Nordnes.
The skansen area is located imediately
behind the Fløibanen Funicular
entrance. All the way up the hill to
Skansen Old Firestation is packed with
old wooden houses.
