to explore. Here are some of the most
interesting churches in the center of
Bergen
The most famous is propably
Mariakirken with its location next to
Bryggen and Bergenhus fortress. It is
one of the oldest churches in Bergen
and dates back to 1180. The
architecture is a combination of
Roman and Gothic. Seats 240 people
The largest and the first you notice,
may be Johanneskirken with its
location at Nygårdshøyden
overlooking the center of Bergen. It
was finished in 1894 and built in neo-
Gothic style. Today it seats 1250.
Bergen Domkirke dates back to 1150
and is built in Roman architecture.
Seats 900 people.
Korskirken (Holy Cross Church) is a
large stone church, built in a cruciform
design between 1120 and 1150, but
has been damaged by fire seven
times, the last time in 1702. The
church seats about 600 people.
