Fløibanen Funicular
Fløibanen Funicular in Bergen is one
of Norway´s most popular attractions.
From the ground station, located only
a few minutes’ walk from the
Fishmarket, the funicular brings you to
the top of Mount Fløyen in a couple of
minutes. April 1. 2022 it finally
reopened after a 6 months major
refurbishment.
The track has been expanded, new
and larger wagons or funiculars have
been installed and the five stations
along the route now has an universal
design which make access for
wheelchairs much easier.
Fløibanen first opened in 1918 and
became a very popular attraction in
Bergen, bringing the inhabitants up to
Mount Fløyen. Here was a huge
restaurant and a lot of hiking routes
and tracks for the population in
Bergen to explore.
The restaurant is still there, together
with a cafe, kiosk, souvenir shop,
several playgrounds for kids and a
network of roads and hiking tracks -
and of course viewing platforms with
an amazing view of Bergen.
The new funiculars is the fifth
generation and is 5 meters longer
than the previous ones (16.59 meter
total length) and weighs 21 tons.

Each of them can accommodate 120
guests, which is 20 more than the last
ones. The first wagons which was
installed in 1918 could bring 65
passengers to the top. The increased
capacity is much needed, especially on
days with cruise visits when the
queues are long.
Like its predecessors, the funiculars
has a glass roof, which makes the
journey up and down spectacular.
In addition to the funiculars, the
stations along the route and the top
and ground station has had an
important makeover. Now all of them
are accessible for wheelchair users.
The track at the top has been
expanded so that wheelchairs and
trolleys now have direct access to
Mount Fløyen without facing stairs or
elevators.
Fløibanen Funicular is open each day
until 11 pm. In weekdays it starts up at
7.30 am and in weekends at 9.00 am.
